We regret that, as of October 2012, the Theatron3 project has been discontinued due to lack of funds needed to maintain the subscription to Linden Labs (Second Life).

Please note: an earlier version - Theatron2 - is still available for users of Internet Explorer.

We are hoping to work with new partners to develop a next-generation version of Theatron in a different Virtual World environment, but we can't guarantee that this will be in place in time for the 2013-14 academic year.

Meanwhile, we'd like to offer a big thank you to all our users for your interest and continuing support.

Introduction

The Theatron3 project involved the importing of a range of both pre-existing and newly designed 3D theatre models into the Second life environment, supplementing these with existing and new interpretative content and a spectrum of original interactive tools, scenarios and automated tutorials, incorporating manipulable and customisable actors, props, sound effects, lighting and scenic technologies, streaming video and scripts enabling individual and group movement/choreography.

The scenarios allowed a wide range of Higher Education subject areas - including but extending far beyond the performing arts - to take advantage of the social, collaborative and interactive aspects of this shared virtual environment.

What will you find on this site?

On this site you can read about the history and background to the project. The site continues to host information designed to introduce users to the Theatron islands, including a range of guides that allowed users to get started using the environment. You can read news about the project on our news blog, and, we would love to hear about your past experiences of using Theatron, whether using the theatres in class, or creating costumes and props etc, so do please get in contact with the project team.

Theatron 3 report now available

The Theatron 3 project final report is also available. The report details the activities and the findings of the project, and is available as two pdfs. The first is the main body of the report. The second pdf contains the reports from the different pedagogical sub-projects and appendices with technical information in them. If you have any further enquiries contact the report's editor Mark Childs.
